This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of Kentucky’s Area-Wide Optimization Model (AWOM) that had the following objectives: to focus on optimizing surface water treatment plants formicrobial/particulate removal; wastriggered by Cryptosporidium events in Milwaukee, Georgia, and Las Vegas;to emphasize moving beyond regulatory compliancerequirements; and, toincrease particulate removal and enhance public healthprotection. Four components of the AWOM are presented and include: Status Component; Evaluation Component; Follow up Component; and,Maintenance Component. Operators using the OptimizationAssessment Software – “Telling theStory” is presented, along with Evaluation and Follow-up Tools, and Life Beyond Microbial Optimization – DBP and Distribution System. Presentation summary includes the following points: the Kentucky AWOP has shown proven benefits at both the stateand water system level in terms of improved water quality;the water systems recognize the benefits of the program interms of operation/maintenance/management; and,the AWOP is recognized and supported as a proactiveprogram by upper levels of state managementoptimization.
